In a statement released to The Tennessee Star, State Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-Brentwood) commented favorably on the idea of a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly in order to save the jobs of National Guardsmen who did not comply with the Biden administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.
“My hope continues to be that the Biden administration chooses to do the right thing and reverses course on their unconscionable plan to defund the courageous men and women who serve in the Tennessee National Guard and have made the personal medical decision not to receive the Covid-19 vaccine,” he said.
“If the Biden administration chooses to take this radical action, I believe the General Assembly should keep all options on the table, including but not limited to a special legislative session, to save the jobs of our brave guardsmen and women,” Johnson added.
Previously reported, Johnson had issued a strong statement in support of Tennessee National Guard members who were due to be fired on June 30 because of their refusal to receive a COVID-19 vaccine and encouraged Governor Bill Lee to help these guardsmen.
Leader Johnson excoriated the Biden administration’s COVID-19 mandates in that statement and said, “It is a travesty that the Biden Administration is prepared to fire brave men and women who faithfully serve our state and nation in the TN National Guard because of their COVID-19 vaccine status.”
Leader Johnson additionally stated in late June that he had encouraged Governor Lee to take action to help the National Guard members.
“I have spoken with the governor’s office and encouraged them to do everything they can to protect these Guard members. We should celebrate those who are willing to serve their fellow citizens in uniform, not penalize them because of a personal medical decision,” he said.
“I call on President Biden to immediately intervene and allow our brave National Guard members to do their job without fear of reprisal due to their vaccine status,” Johnson said.
If the jobs of the National Guard members who refused the vaccine are to be saved, a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly could be necessary in order to address funding issues created by the firing of the members of the Tennessee National Guard who refused the Biden administration’s mandated vaccine.
